HurricaneHousingSearch.org/.com Hurricane Housing Search

Frequently Asked Questions

We have received a number of questions from homeowners and survivors looking for housing.  Here are the most frequently asked questions and answers.

Why have you created this site when other sites are doing similar?  Is this site politically motivated?  Did a political group put you up to this?

We started this website a couple of days after the hurricane struck primarily because we own technology that allowed us to produce the site in less than 8 hours and because we only saw only a couple of other sites doing a poor job at warehousing homeowner data.  Check the public HurricaneHousingSearch.org/.com domain registration record for proof of the time of establishment of this site.

HurricaneHousingSearch.org is non political, non profit, no advertising, and this site is the only directory that is browseable by STATE and searchable by KEYWORD.  No other directory offers this level of query making it easy for agencies to find housing for survivors in need.

This site is NOT politically motivated in any way.  No agency or political group pushed us to produce this site.

We have spent thousands of our own $ marketing the site via Google adwords and we have not asked for a cent from anyone.

This site shall remain online to help future hurricane survivors in need of housing.

Should homeowners require a background check?  How do I go about conducting a background check?

Yes, we encourage homeowners to check the background on anyone you are inviting into your home.  Click here to find a list of companies offering to conduct free background checks for homeowners placing Katrina survivors.

Should homeowners require that survivors sign a disclaimer holding homeowners harmless against injury while in their home?

That is entirely up to you.  We suggest that you have a written agreement with anyone staying in your home with regards to who will be responsible in the case of injury.  You may want to require that survivors staying in your home provide proof of insurance, or ask them to sign a statement holding you harmless (not responsible) in the event of injury.

Does HurricaneHousingSearch.org publish a phone number for homeowners or survivors to contact to receive placement service assistance?

At this time, we are only publishing a phone number for media inquiries and agency inquiries.  In order to keep costs down, we are not accepting calls from homeowners or survivors needing placement assistance.  This website exists to allow homeowners the ability to easily offer housing and for survivors the ability to search by keyword or browse by state.  The parent company of this site, Creative NetVentures, Inc. does not have the resources to accept phone calls from homeowners and survivors.  If you have questions, we will respond to your questions via email: publicrelations@hurricanehousingsearch.org.

I am a survivor looking for housing.  How do receive placement assistance?

You can contact homeowners directly by locating their phone or email within each listing on this site.  If you need placement assistance, please contact your local RedCross agency or FEMA representative.

I am a homeowner who has posted a listing for housing.  How long will it take to receive inquiries?

It depends on where you are located, what type of housing you have offered, and other factors such as demand for the type of home you have listed.  You can help speed the process by contacting your local RedCross agency, and FEMA's USA Freedom Corps - and let them know you have listed your home on HurricaneHousingSearch.org.  As agencies receive correspondence from homeowners noting that you have posted your housing listing here on this site, the agencies will spread the word among their placement staff which will result in more placements.  Also keep in mind that many survivors are still in the initial stages of being relocated into shelters.  As survivors get settled into shelters, and shelters fill up, placements into private housing will increase.
